Ampang & Ukay Heights
Forested ridges on the city's eastern edge.
On the eastern edge of the city, Ampang and Ukay Heights rise towards forested ridges. Established bungalows on generous, often sloping land make this a natural setting for a garden residence with room to breathe.
Ampang is a long-established residential district, and Ukay Heights climbs beyond it towards the forested ridges that frame the city to the east. Plots are often large, gardens are mature, and the backdrop of green hills gives many streets a quieter, almost rural character that belies their distance from the centre. Numerous bungalows here were built decades ago and are now ready for renewal.
With land to spare, a residence here can be conceived as much as a garden as a house. Living spaces can open fully to lawns and planted terraces, a pool can sit within the landscape rather than beside it, and guest quarters or a separate pavilion for parents can be arranged with ease. A knockdown and rebuild lets a family keep a cherished address while gaining a home designed for how they live now.
What we look for here
-
01
Slope and soil
Ground conditions can vary considerably across hillside plots near the ridges. A site investigation early in the pre-construction study informs foundations, retaining structures and where the house can sit most safely and sensibly.
-
02
Rain and drainage
Hillside land near forest receives heavy, sudden rain. Drainage, landscape grading and the capacity of the site's outlets should be designed together so that water is carried away calmly, during construction as well as for decades afterwards.
-
03
Landscape as structure
On a generous plot, the garden is not a finishing touch. Retained trees, new planting, levels and outdoor rooms are best designed alongside the architecture, so that shade, privacy and views mature together as the years pass.
-
04
Living beside the forest
Proximity to green ridges brings birdsong and cooler evenings, and also visiting wildlife, damp and leaf fall. Material choices, secure openings, gutters and maintenance access are worth considering from the outset, so the house remains easy to care for.
